Most clients want to talk about what they don’t want in their lives. Success is defined as the absence of the negative. But such conversations don’t make clear what they do want in their lives. An example I use to illustrate this is: “Telling me what you don’t want is like telling me you’re going on vacation and that you are NOT going to California.” All I know is where you won’t be. I don’t know where you are going.
In my approach clients develop a clear vision of what they do want. For me this is essential for beginning to create change. Once I've helped a client focus on what they want, then I help them develop strategies for getting what they want. My job is to help clients break this process into small steps to create an action plan.
A key element in my approach is to teach clients how to live with a conscious intention. Living consciously and intentionally helps you…pause…interrupt old reactions,… then implement your action plan with new responses and behaviors. With consistent practice of the action plan, the changes you want in your life... become yours.
